Tim Cowles comes to Ocean Leadership from an active research and teaching career in ocean sciences. He has spent over 30 years conducting oceanographic research, focused primarily on the responses of planktonic organisms and plankton communities to the physical processes of mixing and advection, from the microscale to the mesoscale.
He has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and Duke University, respectively, and did postdoctoral work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. After a few years at WHOI as an Assistant Scientist, Tim joined the oceanographic faculty at Oregon State University in 1984.
In addition to his research, teaching, and advising of graduate students, Tim served for five years as Associate Dean of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences.
